My favorite places to eat in Bangkok. Hope everyone enjoys them too!
1. Punnawithi station (E 11)
Hua Seng Hong restaurant (ภัตตาคารอาหารจีนฮั่วเซ่งฮง)
Definitely a place to go if you want to try Dim Sum. Most of the customers are local. Even though their staffs can’t speak English but they have English menu. The restaurant is quite busy during lunch and dinner, especially on the weekend.

Mu-i Bakery & coffee shop (ร้านมูอิ เบเกอรี่)
It is in the same location as Hua Seng Hong but it’s in a different building. They have a small space to sit and sip coffee. I recommend to try egg tart. We love it so much and we brought it with us on the plane while on the way back to the US. Free WiFi with good coffee and snack.

Lookchin Anamai Noodle shop
This is one of my favorite noodle restuarants in Bangkok. Only 10 minutes from Punnawithi or Bangchak station. I have been eating here since I was a kid! It is opposite Kasikorn Bank.
It is the simple rice noodle with pork or beef ball. It is very busy during lunch time everyday, better to be there before noon or after 1 pm.

2. Bangchak station (E 10)
This is my neighborhood and I see more and more foreigners stay in this area. It is much cheaper than Thonglor, Asoke, Sathorn, Silom or Nana area. You can find a local market here, it calls Bangchak market (Talad Bangchak).
I went to visit my family a month ago and heard bad news, they will close this market by the end of 2015 and build a high rise condo instead. So long my market. I hope all the vendors can find a new location soon.
It is similar to Klongtoei market but much smaller. In the early morning (before 9.30 or 10 am.) and late evening (after 5 or 5.30 pm.) are a good time to shop at the market. A lot of street vendors will come out and set their carts on the street. You can find all kind of pre-made Thai food, fresh fruit, seafood, vegetable, and meat here.
Soi 95 is my usual food shopping route. In the morning, I will buy deep fried Salapao first.
Then fried chicken from the vendor name ” Gai Tod Had Yai“. This is our favorite deep fried chicken in Bangkok. You can find every part of chicken meat here. The texture is moist. It’s very crispy but not too oily like other vendors. You will see KFG on the left hand side first (I’m not kidding!), keep walking and you will see this place. His fried chicken is the best. He has sticky rice too. The price will be listed on the white board. You can see from the photo. The whiteboard is hanging from the right corner.(www.google.com/maps/@13.698428,100.605147)
Here’s KFG before my favorite Gai Tod Had Yai vendor.
After that I will buy a drink from a vendor opposite Gai Tod Had Yai. You will see a small cart in front of Chinese Pharmacy, building # 12. I always order Thai tea with milk (Cha Yen). google.com/maps/@13.698398,100.605063
After that I will walk to the main road (Sukhumvit road) and turn left to a Chinese restaurant. The name is
Rosdee ภัตตาคาร(เป็ดย่าง)รสดี
It is a Chinese restaurant. You will see grilled ducks hanging in front of the restaurant. Don’t be afraid! They have other food and also English menu too. The price is not super cheap but reasonable for this type of restaurant. It is quite busy during lunch time. My favorites are Kao Na ped (grilled ducked with a few pieces of cucumber & ginger pickle) and Goi See Mee (Yellow egg noodle with bamboo shoot and chicken meat).

3. On Nut station (E 9)
It used to have a local night market next to Ideo Verve Condo. It had many vendors selling clothes, street food, and a beer garden but too bad the market was closed permanently because another high rise condo project a few months ago.
But during lunch time, you still can find many street food vendors next to Tesco Lotus.
Also, another complex mall opposite soi 83, it has restaurant names Prik Horm restaurant (ร้านอาหารพริกหอม).
It has 2 version here. The easy rule is if you sit outside, order pre-made food from outside. If you sit inside, order from the menu inside the restaurant.
The 1st version, I called it cheaper version. During lunch time, they have many pre-made food and it’s reasonable price. You can sit outside the restaurant and order pre-made food from what you see from my photo.
The 2nd version is an expensive version. You sit inside the air-conditioning restaurant and you must order only the menu from the restaurant.
It is the same owner but they have different menu and of course, they charge different prices. I prefer outside because it’s cheaper and much faster service.
Address: Sukhumvit 83, Bangkok
Tel: 02-742-4842
Hours: 11 am- 11 pm.
The price depends on how many food that you want on top of your rice. In this photo, I ordered 3 kinds of food. Salty chicken, spicy bamboo shoot and fried vegetables with squid. It costs less than $2.
4. Prakanong station (E 8)
Prakanong market at Sukhumvit soi 71. It is similar to Bangchak market. You have to walk about 10-15 minutes from the sky train station and better to come in the evening. You will find a good number of street food vendors here.
It is a fish ball noodle place on soi Sukhumvit 71. From the beginning of the Soi Sukhumvit 71, you look for small alley name Preedee Phanomyong 4. The noodle shop is before that alley. Better to go during lunch time.

Wattana Panich Beef noodle (วัฒนาพานิช ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ)
They are very famous for beef and goat noodle soup. Beef is tender, soup is brown color and you can smell some Chinese herbs from the soup. The price is more than 50 bath per bowl. Goat will be more expensive than beef. It’s quite far from sky train so, better to take a taxi but motorcycle taxi is faster.

– Another great hangout in the evening is Tuba Design furniture and restaurant at Ekamai soi 21(ซอย เอกมัย 21 ,แจ่มจันทร์).
They have a long list of imported and local beer. Food is good. I like Larb Todd (deep fried Larb). The parking is quite small. it’s easy to find a taxi in front of the restaurant.
6. Thonglor station (E 6)
You can find from the cheapest food carts to expensive restauranst in this area. Lots of bar and restaurants in Sukhumvit 55 but first thing that you should not missed if you are looking for street food is
Street food at soi 38, opposite Sukhumvit 55. Another bad news when I visited my home a month ago. They will close this market and build another high rise condo!!!! Seriously??? So, anyone who has a chance to be there, please go and help support those local vendors before they move by the end of 2015
It is a night street food so, you should come here after 6 or 7 pm. You will see lots of food carts after 8 pm. You can find Pad Thai, noodle, Krapao, mango & sticky rice, fresh fruit juices, smoothies (cost not even 50 cents per glass) or even grilled octopus here. Some local restaurant has toilet. If you don’t eat at their restaurant but want to use their toilet, you have to pay about 5 THB.
Mae Varee mango and sticky rice (ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วงแม่วารี)
It is at Sukhumvit 55. If you love mango and sticky rice and want to buy it back home, this is the right place. Not even 1 minute walking from Thonglor sky train station. You won’t miss it because you will see a lot of mangoes and sticky rice and many people in front of this place.

7. Phrompong station (E5)
This is like a station for people who loves expensive shopping mall. It has the Emporium and The Emquartier (same owner). It has Benjasiri park next to Emporium Suite Hotel. This area is my 2nd home. My high school and my 1st job are in this area. Here’s a few places that I have been eating for decade!
Rung Ruang Noodle
A local noodle restaurant family-run business at Sukhumvit soi 26. This is one of my favorites noodle restaurants in Bangkok. I have been eating here more than 15 years! It is a simple noodle with fish balls, pork meat, and gizzard (like liver). Don’t worry, you can choose what you want to put in your noodle! They have deep fried fish skin as an appetizer. They also have Longan drink, Roselle drink or Chinese tea with ice. The portion is small. They are very busy during lunch time, so if you don’t want to wait for your 2nd bowl, better to order two bowls at the beginning. It is a small restaurant without air-conditioning and chairs are stool so, it might be uncomfortable for some people. If you don’t want to eat at the restaurant, you can order and pick it up later. The price is between 40-50 bath per bowl.

The Local by Oamthong Thai cuisine
If you like to eat at a good atmosphere, clean and don’t mind to pay a bit high price for Thai food. This is a good place to try. I really like their food. It’s very traditional southern Thai food. Some dish might be a bit spicy for foreigners. I took my mom there and she likes Kao Yum (Southern Thai dish). She said the sauce is similar to what my grandmother made. I like the appetizer set, tender stewed pork (หมูฮ้อง), and Gang Lun Juan (แกงรัญจวน).

Ms. Rung, Som Tum soi 22
This is a local I-San food in soi 22. It’s a bit of a walk, maybe about 15-20 minutes walking from Sukhumvit road or you can take a motorcycle taxi in soi 22 to the restaurant. I recommend to go around 11 am. so you can try her grill salted fish which serve with grilled eggplant and spicy seafood sauce. Also, it has only 3-4 small tables and 2 big tables. The price is not expensive. I always find an excuse to eat there every time that I visit my family in Bangkok! The owner is a lovely lady, names Rung.

กุ๊กโภชนา (Cook Pochana) soi 22
This is absolutely a place to go for stir fried holy basil with grounded pork (Kao Krapao Moo Sub). It is a basic dish that we (Thais) eat all the time. You can order with or without fried egg. The price for this dish is about 70-80 baht. It might be a bit more expensive than other places but their portion is bigger and it’s really good. This is a local restaurant that you can order a usual Thai dish. The menu is on the wall. If you are not sure about what to order, the owner can speak a bit of English. They have soda, local beer and bottle of water.
Address: google.com/maps กุ๊กโภชนา
Just so you know, if you order seafood, the cost will be more expensive.
If you love shopping at local market, I recommended to check it out during lunch time at Srinakharinwirot University (มหาวิทยาลัย ศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ), soi 23. It is a day time market from 11 am- 2pm. Every Tuesday and Thursday only. We have so many places for lunch time shopping market in Bangkok. This is the market for office workers, when they have a break only 1 hour so, you will see many of them grab a quick lunch and wonder around the market too. You can find many local food, fruits, clothes or even smart phone accessories.
Som Tam in Soi 22 is fantastic!
Cook Pochana in soi 22 is pretty awesome too 🙂
